i rebuilt my jd 200 myself so i only have myself. when it gets hot it loses power..i have checked and rechecked everything, and this is 3rd time i am tearing it apart. i was wondering on timing marks between crankshaft/camshaft if they can be 180 degrees off..the book doesn't say anything regarding compression stroke..any help, thank you everything is new in the engine

I worked on a John Deere with a similar problem; just overhauled. On that one, cheap replacement parts had been used and the exhaust valve was warping. Replaced with new stellite valve and it ran good but smoked until quality rings were installed. Another Kohler with that problem had a flywheel magnet giving up the ghost. A good used flywheel solved that one. The cheapest fix (not in terms of time finding the problem) turned out to be a new push pin for the points. I couldn't see or feel the problem with the pin that was in it but apparently it was expanding in its bore enough to drag when hot. May have been another cheapie aftermarket part and just a shade too big around.

Check the valve clearance; particularly the exhaust valve. Also, when you re-built it, did you check the valve guides for wear? If either valve can move around in that guide, it won't seat properly. When you're checking the valve clearaces, make sure you get that breather assembly put together and installed the correct way.

Another possibility would be the piston rings not seating well. This could be due to incorrect rings (or incorrect installation) or not de-glazing the cylinder walls. Did you have to re-bore the engine? The crankcase on those engines is supposed to operate at a slight vacuum when the engine is running. The manual will tell you how to check this.

Once you get everything working right, you'll have a very good, very dependable engine.

Back your points off to .015 or .016 and see if that helps. Did you try using super with like 2 tablespoons of ATF or Marvel oil in it? That's what I had to do on mine.

Deano. Isuspect you have changed the coil and put on an aftermarket one. If you have throw it away and get you a kohler coil and your problems will be over. They will not run right on any other coil.

You can look at, or download for free, a factory manual at: www.kohlerengines.com

With the timing marks, if they line up as shown, that's it. When the crank turns 360 degrees, the mark on the cam will be 180 degrees off, but when the engine turns another 360 degrees, the marks will line up again, so you're OK there.

Have you retorqued your headbolts after it has run?

If this is a breaker point ignition system, spark timing is set by varying the breaker point gap. (See Kohler manual) Have you checked the timing with a light?

Are all pieces of cooling shroud sheet metal present, and properly installed?

I suspect you may have a bad ignition coil, and are loosing spark when it heats up. Also, you could have a fuel system problem, such as a restriction somewhere in the tank fitting, or lines, or a clogged gas tank vent.

Has the engine been rebored and/or the piston replaced? If there is not enough piton-to-bore clearance, it could begin to seize up when hot.
