After cutting grass for about a half hour, my 1450 simply shuts down. I can crank it, but it takes about 5 minutes of siting and it starts right back up again and I can cut for about 15minutes before it happens again. If I try to start it a little early, it pops one time every 5 to 15 seconds, but that is it. I need to wait the full 5 minutes and it runs fine again. I feel its the coil, but thought I might see what more knowledgable people think. Thanks

I chased a bad coil for better part of 2 months last year. Would do just what yours is doing, but usually waited till I was farthest from the barn. Kept confusing me as to whether it was fuel or spark.

Finally one day, I had the air cleaner off and a can of starting fluid in my hand. It coughed and sputtered and started to die and I smacked it with a squirt of snort and it totally ignored it.

Ah Ha got you you sly fox. New $45 coil (magneto) and the problem is history. My machine only uses the coil and magnets off the flywheel (and a plug)for ignition. I don't have points and that made ignition troubleshooting easy. Plugs don't die like that and restart in 5 min..... but coils do.

Your probably right on the coil, have you felt how hot it is, it should be warm but not extremely hot. Is it the original coil or has it been replaced? It has to be one with the internal resistor and not a car replacement coil. I get mine from Scott Madsons 920-773-2661, a real nice guy to deal with and good prices.

Things I would check before I replace the coil.

Replace the spark plug, I prefer the Autolite 216 for my Kohlers.

Check that the condensor is mounted solid to the engine. The condensor mounts on top of the coil bracket on that one and the stud it mounts on has a screw driver slot on it, when you turn it in it contacts the engine cylinder to get a good ground. Wipe it some to make sure it is clean.

If you haven't done a tune up in some time I would replace the points and condensor. When you get the points remember to get the gasket for the points cover.
