Had a problem with my 1200 today. I jammed the left side of the deck into the mailbox, not fast, just nudged it, just got a bit too close. The clutch cut off, and I put in reverse and tried to restart deck. No go. the clutch would not engage the deck. The clutch would not turn the drive pulley. I rotated belt around and blades were not touching, etc. I pulled out fuse, and found out that the fuse was replaced by a screw. I replaced the screw with a fuse and still no luck. I did not check the switch. My question is this, did I fry the clutch? or ?? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?

Called IH place today and they have a coil only for the pto unit and will be here in 2 days for $77. COuld not believe it. I also bought a muffler for her for $22.50. Other placed were anywhere from 196-380ish and upwards of $55 for the muffler. I got a heck of a deal.

Took clutch apart today and noticed that one wire had come off and got jammed into the plastic coil and fried the coil. My luck. Now to find a cheaply priced coil. Thanks for all the help though.

On my Old JD 140 the clutch coil was an aluminum coil encased in a "jello mold," and epoxied in place with epoxy and what looked like sand. Over the years, the potting material failed, and the coil protruded from the bowl, rubbing on the moving clutch parts. Destroyed it. Found out how many turns of wire were involved and rewound the coil with electric motor wire of the same size. added a few extra winds for good measure. Cleaned all traces of the old stuff from the bowl, sand blasted it, and epoxied the new coil in. Cost the wire and two packages of epoxy. Replacement from dealer was in the $250 range. After several years, my repacement still works!

Checked voltage to magnet on clutch and am getting 12.33 volts to it. I think the clutch is fried, or bad wire. I will be removing the clutch here shortly if my shoulder gets better. What else to check?? Bruce

With the engine off and you apply 12 volts to the coil do you hear anything at all? You should hear a SNAP when the coil pulls the driven disc into the driving hub. If you don't hear anything your coil probably has a broken wire somewhere. If you hear a click it is trying to pull in but the brake flange adjustment is too far out to work. It seems funny that a bump would burn up your clutch, it seems more likely that a bump would cause something to come loose or a wire to break.

Since it quit when you bumped the deck the first thing I would check is the connector near the PTO. Trace the wire back from the PTO and you should find a connector about 8 to 10 inches back. If that is connected good I would trace the wire back to the switch to see if it got pinched in two.

If you have a voltmeter it would simplfy the troubleshooting. Make sure the fuse you installed is still good or that would indicate you have a short.
