When I shut off my tractor it gives one little backfire as it quits. What causes this , how do I fix it, and is it serious? Thanks Paul

Have 2 Kohler's. One older 15 single without electrical fuel shut off valve on carb and a new one with it. The shut off is located where the carb bowl attachment nut is usually located.

The new one doesn't backfire regardless of throttle setting at shutdown.

The old one will not backfire at the full throttle notch, but if I slow it down, right after the last rev before the crank stops POW. So, when I shut her down, I just leave the throttle at the run notch.

I understand the mechanics of engines including those stated, but I haven't been able to figure this one out where more fuel is better unless it is too much fuel and that upsets the fuel air mix and it doesn't explode.

Mark

there is actually a john deere bulletin on the new L's. they have the elec carb solenoid. this bulletin says to shut off the tractors at about 1/4 throtlle, not idle speed. some mumbo jumbo about the solenoid allowing the gas to pass through the carb at idle, but cuts it dead at speed. hard enough to undersatnd, much less explain. the new units run so lean for emmissions purposes that backfire is to be expected. i don't like it, and neither do the customers, but...

Kenny W. is on the right track. The mower manual actually has a section on this. By the way, you probably need to check your air filter, especially the prefilter. They both can suffer damage from the backfiring.

Some engines (my brand new craftsman) have a solenoid type shutoff on the bottom of the carb.
Mine was delivered to me faulty. Sears replaced it (actually the whole carb) and can shut it off anyway that I want now.

The muffler gets real hot and the raw fuel that gets spit out the exhaust when the ignition is shut off hits the hot metal of the muffler and ignites, causing the BOOM! Let the machine idle for 30 seconds and then shut it off. Kenny

What happens is you do not let your Tractor slow down to idle speed which causes gas to escape through the exhaust and when it gets to the muffler it lets out a Backfire. My lawn mower does it. It gets everyone that rides it. I hope this helped. Try Rons idea. Slow down your idle speed.

Not serious, likley cause is idle speed a little high.

Thanks alot everyone, this is the first time I've used this form and it won't be the last, great responses. This morning I changed the air filter ( very dirty) and adjusted the throttle cable, this gave me full throttle and a lower idle speed. Tomorrow I'm going to let it warm up and try the cool down at idle theory.
Thanks again Paul
