My Craftsman Tractor has a Kohler engine-Model Number CV-14s, Type 1452. I've been told by a Sears Technician that I need a new engine. The engine only has about 200 Hours on it and the tractor is only five years old. Has anyone else had a bad experience with the Kohler engine of this type. I think there may have been some defect. The tractor has been well maintained. Any comments? Please e-mail me.

My wife's father (A true blue sears-a-holic) bought her an 18hp Kohler fired lawn tractor before we were married. It ran fine for the first few years because it did not get used much. However, within last year it now runs about 10 min. belches out a cloud of smoke and croaks. You can beg with the key for hours and it refuses to start again. Personally I quit buying from Shears long ago because of the drop in quality and the underhanded business practices.

I had the same problem. I ended up welding peices of one inch flat stock to the tines and it works better than ever. If you can do it this way it is real cheap!
Good Luck

I bought an 18hp Sears tractor in 1994 and it blew up the second year I had it. Sears replaced it without a question which leads me to believe there may have been a problem with the engine. By the way, the 20hp (Kohler as well) replacement I used for two years is no longer running and I'm trying to get a refund from Sears so I can buy another tractor. I took excellent care of both of these machines and am now permanently soured on Sears tractors. Remember that Sears boldly displays the slogan, "Satisfaction Guaranteed" on their door. If you can get some additional input from other users, you may build a strong case for getting Sears to replace the engine.

Lots of problems with this. One you would have to replace the deck with a right discharge, or rig up a way to rev. rotation of the belt. Motors turn opposite. Do you have the motor, or would you have to buy it? If you have to pay for one anyway, pick up a 20hp Onan twin. It will swap easy, and I think you would be ahead in the long run.
