Hello:
New to this forum, but sure could use some help. Have a 2155 Cub Cadet with a Kolar engine. During this mowing season have had major problem. Starts great, runs great except after about 1 hour of mowing in 85-95 degree weather. Then, at wide open throttle used for mowing, engine suddendly looses power, acts like it is going to die then hard backfire. If leave wide open dies. If shut back to idle it continue to run until open up wide then same thing happens. If allow unit 1-2 hours not running have another 1/2 - 1 hour mowing until same thing happens.
Have checked spark and replace plug with correct gap, removed fule tank cap, and changed fuel filter. I am Running 93 octane in engine. The engine acts like it gets Vapor Locked when it gets hot.

Any help sure would be appreciated.

John

Stop running 93 octane in it. Its not a racecar. Its meant to run on the cheap stuff. Believe me you arent extending its life any by running expensive gas.

High octane fuel burns hotter. After a certain amount of time you may be overheating your engine which can distort the cylinder walls and piston rings along with a host of other things.

Try the cheap stuff next time and see how it works.

Have you checked the spark when it dies or after it cools off. A quick way to find out if it the igntion is to unplug the kill wire in the hearness where the tractor and engine wires plug to each other. Usually it is a white wire, then go run it, if it still dies then you know it is in the egnine and not the tractor. This thing has 2 coils on it if it is a V twin, so you have to eliminate the safety system, becasue it sounds like you mighht be loosing ignition to me. If it has a SAM unit on it, that could be going bad also. If you get your engine model go to www.kohler.com and you can download a manual for this engine.

The first place I'd check is the exhaust valve. I'm not familiar with your tractor model, but sometimes older cast-iron Kohler engines had this problem. When the engine dies, if you try to re-start immediately, does it spin over easily with no compression? If so, you likely have a valve stuck open.
The best cure is to replace the sticking valve, and to check the valve guide itself for wear when you do this.
I had a 12 hp Kohler that pulled this stunt. About the third time it happened, I was working on something else close by and waiting for it to cool off when I heard a "PING" from the engine. I started it, and it ran fine - for a few minutes. Replacing the valve cured it.

Check the valves they expand when hot thats why its backfiring,if it backfires in the carb its the intake, backfire in ex its ex valve
