Went to set the point gap on my 1450 cub cadet. I was told to set it to .020. I set it to .020 and it will not run at full throttle. Set it to .018 and it runs fine but when I turn the deck on it loses power. Are the points bad or am I setting them to the wrong specifications. FYI-I ran a compression check and it has 65psi.

if you have a timing light, look on the side of the blower housing and you will see a little button plug, remove that button plug, turn the flywheel until you see a mark on the flywheel. take a peice of chalk and mark the mark on the flywheel, hook up the timing light, then set the timing so the little mark is in the middle of the window, that should get the timing correct.

A quick look and I didnt see any plug. Which side is it on. I do not set the timing to any advance. Ive set the points up and down from 0.20 and it still runs bad at high idol. Do you think the points could be bad?

A little more informaion here might help. Why did you set the points? Was it running bad and you decided to set them, or was it running good and you decided to set them and then it acted up?

I wouldn't waste my time messing with used points, I would buy a new set of points, condensor, and a spark plug and go from there. When you install the condensor make sure it is getting a good ground as it mounts on top of the coil and the stud it mounts on goes up against the cylinder to get a good ground, I usually wipe the stud some to make sure it makes good contact.

It could be carbruetor problems but you need the electrical checked out before you go there.

When you say it acts up when you engage the electrical PTO I would check the voltage. A bad coil in the PTO could load down the voltage and if your battery is weak and your charging system not putting out enough amps it could affect the amount of spark.

I find it hard to believe that changing the points the small amount you did would make that much difference. I have seen them run both sides of .20 and no problem. When you install a new set of points make sure the area where they attach is clean and the wire connector is good. Check the push rod for the points and make sure it is good and that it opens the points good to .20 and that it alows them to fully close. I have heard of the push rods being wore down and not working.

You could have a weak coil but I would start with the cheap stuff first.

The .020" is a starting point. Try .018 to .022
and see which offers the better performance.
