I'm working on a JD 318 and trying to pull the flywheel off. Any ideas on doing so, or do you get the big hammer and pry bar out and do the old hit the crank and pry on the flywheel deal?

Make sure you pull it with a flange puller. A big hammer can do some major damage. The biggest is if you strike a flywheel hard enough it can knock the magnets out of the flywheel. There are ceramic magnets under the flywheel that charge the battery, and if one of them get shattered or broke, then comes a new flywheel. Cost probably over $200.00

My advice is to obtain the correct puller. Small engine flywheels of this type should be pulled from the center part of the wheel, not pulled or pryed from the edges. On the other hand, if you feel lucky.....
