Thanks for the info on the pulling of the flywheel on this JD 318. I figured as much that I'd need a puller, but you know how it goes---trying to get this done as quick as possible--too many irons in the fire, etc. So, I made up a puller quick, and she's off.

Here's the next question: I'm replacing the ignition controller under that flyheel and am wondering if I should also replace that ring that actuates the controller. That ring just slips off the crank and is indexed with the flywheel key.

So, whatcha think? Sure would hate to do this all over again for not replacing this lousy ring the first time!!!!!

Didn't know if these rings ever go bad or what.

Normally neither part goes bad, so if'n were me, I would put both parts on, I would not want to remove the engine again.

Yea, I just checked on the price of that ring---only 17 bucks. So, heck yea, I'm putting one in.

Wasn't getting any spark---new coil and condensor too. Noticed though that nothing was "triggering" the coil and so figured it to be that controller.

Thanks for the reply.
