I understand the John Deere STX 38 was last made in 1997. Can anyone provide pros and cons to this mower? Looking at one with a rear bagger. Price info, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Al: My folks have one--bought new and still running strong. They mow about 3/4 acre with some fairly steep hills. No problems so far other than the usual maintenance items. The Kohler is a decent engine, though it"s no Honda. It has the hydro transmission, which has performed flawlessly. They do not have a bagger on it, but occasionally tow a yard cart. Dad"s a stickler for preventative maintenance, which certainly hasn"t hurt the machine"s longevity, but overall they"ve been very happy with the machine. The one downside of the Kohler is that it doesn"t like to start cold--it will always start, but it does take more turning than most engines I"ve seen.

Thank god the kohler is no honda. Honda mowers and engines are garbage in comparison.

I have a STX38, yellow deck, built in 1991. I really like this mower. I have about 1200 hrs on it.
Pros: 1.Turning radius is great. 2.I have had only normal maintenance with the exception of the transmission (gear). Had to be overhauled...$400
3.Easy for young operators to use.
4.All the safety features of a modern mower, such as shut off switches when you leave the seat.
5.Oil pressurized system (long engine life).
6.Parts super easy to get, locally and usually very reasonable.
7.Parts and JD service manuals are superb. NO comparision to any other manuals Ive ever seen.
8.Grass cut is fantastic. Zero compaints on the deck.
9.Never had any problems with the deck bearings.
10.Love that Kohler Command engine.

Cons: 1.Yellow deck is gear drive mower. I like gear drive, but some dont. I have had to overhaul the xmission once...expensive....
2.slow ground speed
3.I owned a black deck (hydro drive) and sold it. IT was not the mower that the yellow deck is. Black deck is just a cheaper deck.

Bottom line is that if you have a yard that only takes you an hour to mow, then the yellow deck STX 38 is excellent.

Price: Ive seen them anywhere from $500 to $1200. Around kansas there are a lot of these mowers you can get around $800 with a lot of life left in them.

I would definitely buy another yellow deck mower. The black deck will work fine too, if you must have a hydro transmission.
