Any way to test an armature? Briggs Vanguard

I have a Briggs Vanguard 18 hp twin, that has a weak spark. Have changed the plugs, the motor is 5 years old with 500 hours on it. Is there any way to check the armatures (2) with VOM, resistance, etc. Don't want to spend $70 if that isn't the problem. Is there anything else in the ignition that could cause this problem?

Before you spend the cash, I would clean it with a wire brush - both the contacts on the flywheel and on the coils. Usually they are just rusty/dirty and this will take care of it.

Temporarily disconnect the common "kill" wire connection between both coils, and check to see if the spark improves on one or both coils.

you need to look at something besides coils. This has 2 coils, if both are weak, you might have a bad flywheel, coils not properly gapped. One other thing to look at is there is a diode between the coils. This keeps the coils from grounding to each other.

Guys, thanks for the input. Last night went to Autozone and bought a spark tester. It is a gadget that you set the gap a certain distance and see if it jumps the gap. I set it at 20,000 volts and it jumped just fine. A document I found on the web from Briggs said a lawn mower should run fine on 10,000 volts, so it must be some other problem causing the rough running. Now looking at carb and fuel pump. Any way to test fuel pump? pressure gauge, etc?
