16HP Briggs Twins valve seat problems

I have a 16hp briggs twin that was only running on 1 cylinder. I thought I had a broken connecting rod as no air came out of the spark plug hole when I turning over the engine. After pulling the head off, I was surprised to find the problem was the exhaust valve seat that came loose. Now the area around the valve seat is all beat up. I was thinking I was going to have to have it aluminum-welded up and re-machined to fit a new valve seat. The local lawnmower repair guy said you could just have it machined for an oversize valve seat, but he did not know if briggs makes one anymore. So my question is, anyone know where to get an oversized exhaust valve seat, or can a machine shop make this also.

Thanks

David

Dave, I have an 18 hp Briggs that has the same problem. I was told by a mower parts dealer that no oversize seats were made for this mower. He said to stake around the seat area with a center punch to hold it in. Well I tried this and my valve seat had been hammered so badly that I had to grind the valve stem so it would seat. I used the mower for about a month with that repair and now the seat is flopping loose again. I would like to know how you repaired yours. this mower was left here when we bought the house. I don't know if I should put the money into fixing it.

Machine shops have access to generic valve seats, by dimension. It's quite likely a knowledgeable place can help you.

Thanks for the info Bob. I did a archive check and it seems the briggs twin has a history loose valve seats. I guess as vents get clogged with crud. The problem is, you really cant't see how bad it is with all the sheetmetal covering the engine.
