MY 14 HP BRIGGS (MODEL 2877707, TYPE 1272-E1) HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH GAS LEAKING INTO THE OIL ALL SEASON. FIRST, I PUT AN INLINE SHUT OFF VALVE IN THE FUEL LINE. THINKING THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED I RAN THE MOWER, AFTER THE MUFFLER HEATED UP, A 2' FLAME SHOT OUT. I SCREWED UP AND INSTALLED THE VALVE IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. HOPEFUL THAT I DIDN'T DO IRREPARABLE DAMAGE, I CLEANED THE CARB, CHANGED THE FLOAT NEEDLE AND REINSTALLED THE SHUT-OFF VALVE PROPERLY. AFTER CHANGING THE OIL I STARTED THE ENGINE. IT NOW HAS A SLIGHT KNOCK AND RUNS A LITTLE ROUGH, BUT CONSIDERING, RUNS QUITE WELL. HOW CONCERNED SHOULD I BE WITH THE KNOCK? SHOULD I TEAR DOWN THE CYLINDER AND REWORK IT. ANY PARTICULAR DAMAGE I SHOULD LOOK FOR IN THE CYLINDER?

If you ran it with gasoline diluted oil, you probably have rod damage. I would look there and also the crank shaft.
