Im stumped. I have a Kohler 12 hp engine that I cannot start.
Here is the recent history.

It was running when I parked it one day. Then the next day, my son tried to start it and could not get it started. When I went out to start it, I barely got it to run, figuring he had just flooded it.
I ran it all day and everything was fine. Then the next day, I could not get it to start at all. So it was running when I parked it.

Engine turns over and seems to have good compresson.

It backfires occasionally while Im trying to start it.

There is good spark at the plug. Ive changed the plug out with a known good plug. Still wont start.
I rebuilt the carb thinking the float was stuck. Everything looked very good I put in a carb kit about 20 hours earlier and there were no gas residues found at all.
I had fresh gas in the tank and the fuel filter is not clogged, it is new, too.
I checked the points and recently installed new ones, with a gap of 0.020".
Only thing I can think of is a bad flywheel key, but it seems I would have to pull the engine for that....
So in summary, here's what I got.

Hot blue spark
Fresh gas
air cleaner is also new
confirmed fuel line is open and carb in good shape
This engine ran when I parked it.

any help would be very much appreciated.
thanks,
dwight

These motors were famous for sticking exhaust valves. Although the problem shows up more when the motor is hot, I guess anything is possible. Carbon will build up on the valve stem and sometimes a puller is needed to get them out. If you get it going, try some Marvel Mystery oil in the gas to stop the sticking. Unrelated, but still important, you might want to pull the head off, and scrape out the carbon. This is important to stop pre-ignition.

Check the carburetor mounting gasket and bolts, also could be the intake valve clearance.

The flywheel key would not be an issue as this engine is battery ignition with the point driven from the cam. I would check for valve sticking or checking the valve clearance. You also might have a bad/ intermitant coil.

Sounds Like no fuel getting into the motor. Try spraying something into the carb while trying to start it see if it will run. I dont like starting fluid, But have found them to start on WD-40. Be extremely careful you mentioned it backfiring. You didnt mention whether it did it out of the carb or exhaust. Or Like you said it might be timing. Just my 2cents worth LOL

I tried some "ether" in the carburetor. It backfires only thru the carburetor.

It still wont start.
