1980's-ish Snapper dies when under load and other

Bought my first house recently so I picked up a 80-something-er-other Snapper lawnmower for $500. 16hp B&S twin and it came with a 48" deck and a 48" snowblower...even a set of chains for the rear tires. I was happy with it. Then problems started.

Currently it's dieing when under a load. I can start it up, let it get as evened out as it ever gets, and then as soon as I engage the mower it dies. If I drive it across the yard it wants to die every 5' or so. However if I pull out the choke it keeps running, doesn't show any signs of dieing even when the mower is engaged. Any ideas? I'm getting new spark plugs for it (anyone know the proper gap?), but any other advice? Anyone heard of some lawnmower carb cleaner sorta stuff called LMT (Lawn Mower Tuneup) that is made by the people who make PB'Laster? Was recommended to me by someone.

Lights don't work, but I figure I can just rewire those.

Smokes a bit on startup, but it goes away after it warms up. Not to worried about it right now.

Rear axle leaks...having a hard time figuring out where from.

Are there maintenance manuals for these? Local mower place that sells Snapper parts says no, but they haven't been real supportive so far. Where can I get one if they exist? How can I figure out what year it is and the model of it?

Lotsa questions, but I like the thing so far. When it runs that is. It's old and rusty but it's all metal and was pretty cheap. Should keep the lawn low and the snow away if I can just get it running reliably.

Try some SeaFoam in the gas. I haven't tried it yet but people say its the greatest stuff in the world. If that doesn't work you've probably got some crud in the carb, pull it and clean it...

If you think the rear end is over full drain some off already.

clean your carb...high speed circuit doesn"t deliver enough fuel to keep running under load. Also, dump a bit of b-12 into the fuel.

Where does your rear axle leak from? Mine appears to be coming out of the fill hole...which is the top hole. I'm wondering if someone filled it to the fill hole up on top instead of the check hole on the bottom. I can see where the mistake could happen...but oy, that's a lot of extra oil.

well i know you might dissagree with me (you probably will) but its fine that its greasy if the oil is filled up to the check, and if you remove the oil it can make teh leak worse so unless your painting or restoring i wouldnt do anything to it. if you do you will probably have to by new seals

Well, it appears that it may be filled even higher than the check, up to the fill hole which is almost a foot higher! I've run out of light today so I can't confirm anything.

All the diagrams I've seen say the fill hole is the top hole and the check hole is the bottom one. I've got oil coming out of the fill hole...makes me wonder just how high the level is.
