I have a roper lawn tractor with a twin briggs. I have done almost everything including rebuilding the carb and cleaning and blowing out every hole I saw. The problem is it still does not start with out me holding my and over the carb completely choking it and then removing it. Just choking it normally does not work. Then after starting it that way it does not stay running unless the choke is on. PLEASE HELP?? The address below shows the carb that I have but I have no Idea what the model is.

Thanks for all your help. I ended up rebuilding the Motor and the carb and now it runs great.
By chance is there any one out there that has a Roper yt 160ct? I need some one to take a picture or if they have a repair manual for the belt clutch brake system for it. I am willing to pay for them.
Thank you
Jason

Thank you for the help but I have done everything you have told me already. The suction line does spit fuel into the carb as we took the top of the carb off and it was shooting fuel with no problem.
The suction at the hose does not however have a lot of suction (barely sucks on to my finger) I had it running for about 15 minutes and driving.
When I turned it off it started again but when I waited a couple of hours it would not start. I is really bugging me as I work on motors for fun all the time and I just have tried everything
accept installing a new Carb!! The URL below has a picture of my carb.

IN THE FUEL PUMP THERE SHOULD BE TWO LITTLE TINY SPRINGS. CHECK THE FLOAT SETTING, GAS SHOULD BE ABOUT A 1/2 OF AN INCH FROM THE TOP OF THE CARB.

My briggs twin 16 Roper did the same thing. In my case the fuel pump was bad. They sell the pump on ebay cheep. Worth a try.

It appears to have a pulse pump, two plastic ports, which should be examined closely for the integrity of the flapper valves, check balls and springs to make sure they are assembled and working properly.

For whatever reason it is not getting gas, simple as that. Start with:
Clean the junk out of the fuel tank. Take off and flush.
Blow out the lines good, new fuel filter if it has one, check at the carb if it's getting fuel.
Then take the carb completely apart, everything, and boil it out good with a soaking carb cleaner for at least two hours. Rinse good with water and blow out all orfices (everyone). Now replace the needle vlave, and set the float height. Replace the idle adjustment and the high speed adjustment turned out 1 1/2 turns or so. Don't forget the new gaskets.
Start and adjust mixtures.
Thats it.

If this is an older opposed twin, then you have a lot of things to check.
1. is it getting gas to the carb?
2. are both plugs firing?
3. what is the compression? Low compression, low vacumn, no running.
4. Check you valves, if the are not seating, it will not suck fule into the cylinder.
5. Check the vacumn line going to the carb, if that line is cracked or if the pumpt body itself is cracked, no vacumn, no fuel to carb.
If you check ALL this and if it does not solve the problem, repost and let me know what you have done and I will see if I can help out.

Have you contacted the technical guys at Briggs? Their website has a section for technical questions and I have found them to pretty helpful.

Beyond that it sounds to me that the motor is running really lean for some reason but I know you know that at this point. I keep thinking about a vacuum leak somewhere in the intake system, assuming that the carb is properly adjusted. You can spray around the intake system with WD40 and if you hit an area where it is leaking it will smooth out right away.

Best of luck on this. I had a brand new 20HP L-head twin that even the factory couldn"t find the problem on and after 2 years I found a $0.25 part in the governor linkage to be the culprit.

This is basically the same problem I am having. Although mine will run fine after I get it started. My problem is just getting it to start. I do the same thing, place my hand over the top of carb and it fires right over.
