On a Kohler engine the neg on the ign. coil goes to the points and condenser.if not you will invert the spark at the plug.

It does NOT matter which way the terminals are orientated on either the Ignition Coil or Starter Solenoid. The more important thing, is that the correct wires going to these devices is installed properly.

The wire from the battery (or positive source) (through the ignition or key switch) goes to the (+) Ignition Coil Terminal. The Points and condensor are connected to the (-) Ignition Coil Terminal.

On the Starter Solenoid, the ground is picked up via being mounted to chassis ground. The (+) wire is connected to the small solenoid terminal which comes from the (S) terminal from your Key Switch.
