The Snapper manual I got just says the level it should be at and how to check it. No mention of what oil should be in the snow blower's gear box.

For clarification purposes it's the gear box that the pto-shaft goes into and the auger shafts go out of in the center of the blower.

Most any small engine shop will have "00" grease.

Anything else I could use? Gear oil?

The local place that I get my parts from doesn't seem to have that stuff or know where to get it.

Probably doesn't matter that much as long as it doesn't leak out or stay to thick to lubricate well.
This is the gearbox at the augers? You probably don't have to worry much about that getting hot... Maybe try some gear oil. Run 'er a little while and see if it gets hot or leaks, if it does put a little grease in.
