Snapper LT16 won't go into low range

Had my first attempt at blowing snow tonight. Not so good, the thick packy stuff stopped it cold in 6'. Doesn't seem to want to go into low range. I can move the range lever back and forth freely the entire range of motion without feeling much drag on it. I'm thinking I'm stuck in high?

What to check?
What to do?
How much work is this to do myself?

I sometimes have the same problem, the range shifter on mine needs a couple of good yanks to get it to engage.

If it does not move in either hi or low, check your rear axle shear bolts 1st, I found out both of mine broke after tearing into a bunch of other stuff I didn"t need to do...

Okay, I guess I need to clarify some things.

A. The tractor does move, it just seems to be in high range and doesn"t want to go anywhere when it gets any kind of load on it. IE: running into a drift of heavy, packy snow. Engine keeps running, auger keeps turning...but the tires aren"t moving and neither is the tractor.

B. The lever for high, neutral, and low on top of the left fender just moves back and forth freely. Doesn"t seem to catch or drag on anything to indicate you"re moving anything. Doesn"t exactly flop around but you can move it all the way from low to high, not notice a thing, and the tractor doesn"t move any differently.

Local Snapper dealer said it may be a roll pin or something in that shaft...going to check it out now. Got a good 8" on the ground.

Well, the guys at the store were right. The upper pin had been replaced with a cotter pin that had snapped off inside of the l-n-h shaft under the seat. I dug through my stuff and found a bolt and some nuts, put them in, and whalla, it goes into low and neutral now.

I need some wheel weights though, the back digs straight down if the front end hits any resistance. Need to even the weight up a bit more. Anyone know where I can get wheel weights for a Snapper LT16?

What worries me is that the previous owner's kid (around 8 yrs old) races snowmobiles and he does all the work on it. If he jigie rigged all this stuff on this tractor...I hope he doesn't on his kid's snowmobile.

Wheel Weights. I have just found out that the Bolens yard tractor weights will fit right nicely. Its another option. Dad made his own by melting wheel weights and pouring the lead in a coffee can and then drilling the hard lead to fit the wheel lugs.

Good luck
