Diagnosing JD- Kohler stalling

Lately my 1969 JD 110 w/8 hp Kohler engine stalls when I try to engage the PTO or when I try to accelerate.

I have replaced the spark plug (although it looked fine- no carbon deposits, oil, etc.), cleaned the fuel lines and deposit bowl, cleaned out the carb and the idle screws, and adjusted the idle mixture and high-speed idle screws.

Oh yeah, I've noticed that there's air blowing out of the engine near the top, and it's not where the exhaust pipe is.

That may lead to the next Q: If need be, how much can I expect to pay to replace/rebuild that engine?

Kohler singles are known for blowing head gaskets. Replacing the gasket will probably cure the problem. Make sure to clean all surfaces and use new washers and grade 8 bolts as the old ones have been heat annealed and will not torque properly. Run the engine to operating temp, turn off and let sit until cold, and re-torque. Good luck

You need to rebuild the carb, get the model and serial number off of the motor and call your local kohler master parts distributor..he probably has a carb rebuild kit...

Generally it contains

gaskets
jets

Gasoline is a very corrosive substance and erodes the jets, so you need to replace them after such a long period of time...

As far as the engine blowing out the top, remove the engine shrouds - you may have clogged air vents - but in general the vanes from the flywheel are supposed to blow air over the top of the engine to cool it..
