I just got an old cub cadet and I believe it is a 1962 or 63 model 70. It has the kohler model #K161s motor. From what I found that was only available in the early model 70"s. But the serial # on the trans axle is 351350 R7 stamped upside down. According to the cub web sites that means it is a 1970 model. It looks exactly like the picture of the first model 70"s and looks nothing like the ones made in 1970. Am i reading the serial number wrong or what. If anyone could help I would be truly indebted to you. This is my first restoration. By the way I got the tractor for $50 and it runs and drives and has the original tires on it...sweet!!! thanks for your help

You are reading the casting number on the housing. Look on top of the housing above the rear cover for a stamped in number. All the 70 models had the 7 HP K161 engine. The K181 8 HP was not installed until the model 86.

Just checked an older 70 I have sitting out here and the serial number is on the right side of the trans case, stamped on the front cover of the trans.
