Hi, I have a 1966 Cub Cadet model 71, with the 7 horsepower Kohler. It is in very good condition but it smokes like a freight train(the rings and or valve seals are bad) and it keeps blowing headgaskets(3)so far. We always torqued the headbolts to orginal specs/used a good OEM metal gasket and have come to the conclusion that the head and/or blocked is warped. I wouldn't want to overhaul it if the block is no good.Where can I find a good used engine for this thing? I understand the 7 horse is kinda' an oddball and hard to find. Will a 10 horse from a model 105 or so fit? Thanks.

I just got a new rebuilt motor for my 72, that K161 is pretty easy to find. I found one site online that had them brand new for $650. I paid $375 shipped from a guy named Kevin over on ihcubcadet.com

And it will hold its value if kept original.

The 105 engine will slip right in making your tractor a 102 (without the fenders). Kenny

The are no problems with the 7HP Kohler with getting parts and rebuilding. Heads are available and a good machine shop can take care on any block issues. A simple bore with a new piston and rings, along with any other worn parts will bring new life to this motor.

A 10,12 or 14 will bolt right in if it spec's out for a Cub Cadet. It must have smaller flywheel and blower housing, and you will have to shorten throttle cable. There is no problems with the 7 HP engine. You should have the head resurfaced and any GOOD machine shop can resurface the block. It would probably cost about $200 at the most to rebuild the 7 HP.
