Went to start the tractor and all I got was a terrible grinding of gears. Pulled the sheet
metal shroud and saw the starter drive in
pieces. Went to the dealer and he ordered one
but told me they were too busy to work on it.
He was kind enoug to tell me that to remove the
starter...you had to drop the drive shaft...
unbolt the motor...drop the pto drive belts
and lift the rear of the engine about a foot.
Anyone have any experience with this? Is it at
all possible to remove the starter through the
front of the tractor without lifting the engine?
Any info appreciated Geo.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still waiting on the starter. I was over at the dealers yeesterday
and they said it was shipped yesterday afternoon.
Hope to have here in Maine early this week.

I've got the hood removed and the drive shaft
unbolted. Also removed the front pto belts
and finally found all four bolts holding the engine in. Made up a tripod hoisting frame
and will use a come-a-long to lift it. Just
have to remove the fuel line and both the choke and throttle cable and it should be
good to go. Looks like once I get it up in the air...all I have to do is remove the side sheet metal...then it looks like remove
the starter cable and the two nuts holding the
starter on. I'll let you know how it goes back
togheter. Hope to have it back operating mid to
late week. Would'nt you know looks like we've
got a decent storm brewing for Tuesday here in
New England!

Thanks again fo the replies and I will join the
yahoo Ariens group. Didn't know there was one.

George.

Well, got the starter and installed it and dropped
the engine back in. Everything appears to be working
ok. After seeing it apart...I thought maybe it was
possible to remove the starter without lifthing the
engine...but you have to tip the starter outward.
The problem is the rod that runs along the frame
to rotate the front rockshaft is in the way. Could
have been a lot worse. Thanks again for the replies.

Hi George, I have a GT-19 and they are correct. The twin Kohler starter location is below the side of the frame. Also, the front lift rod runs along that side. It isn"t as difficult as it sounds. Two bolts uncouple the drive shaft, take off front PTO belt, remove 4 mounting bolts from base of engine and lift the engine up until the starter clears. Be careful of the exhaust pipe sticking through the side. Shove a 4 X 4 under the engine or some other block. It is a heavy bugger. Patience is required also. Since you"re a proud Ariens owner, why not join our Ariens Group on Yahoo? Jim

More than likely you are going to have to raise the engine up to r/r starter. You should be able to remove PTO belts, unbolt engine and pick up the side of the engine with the starter on it and block it, then take starter off.

I have a GT17 that I am restoring, but haven't had to tackle the job that you speak of...I started a group just for Ariens though, and someone there might know. Here is a link.
