I just inherited a JD 318. It runs great, but the Levers on the left side do not work. I assume they let the deck up and down. That doesn't happen. Ha ha. I found that the valve for the hyd. the levers hook to is stuck. Is this a common problem or does anyone have any suggestions? I know the hyd. pump is ok because the power steering works. Thanks a bunch!

I recently bought a 318 with the outer lever locked up. I tried WD-40 but it was in a bind. I took off the fender deck, the battery & box, the mower deck and the belly grass screen off of the tractor, then crawled under and removed the hydraulic valve body. I then used WD-40 to remove the stuck piston and massage it around. I went to the dealer and found that there is no rebuild kit available but a new valve body is $275. I massaged the valve body some more and re-installed it. I changed the hydraulic oil and filter (6 Qts JD low viscosity) and reassembled everything, started the tractor and ran the hydraulics through the routine in the dealer service manual,(Warm-up, filling circuits by using them...) The job took me 6 hours and I'm not a mechanic. Tractor works fine, I used it all summer and found one leak where I left a fitting loose (just watch for hyd. oil on the garage floor). You will need only a basic set of tools that includes "flare end" wrenches for the hydraulic lines. Wear safety glasses while you are under the machine so that oil and debris will not get into your eyes! Grease the u-joints while you have the fender off. Have fun! Go to "Weekend Freedom Machine" site. Hope this helps....Ric.

A lot of WD40 and patience will fix your problem. It is probably not the valve that is stuck, though, it is probably where the levers pivot that is sticking. This ia very common problem when a tractor sits for a little time
