Hello
I am trying to get my old mtd farmking running. It has the old cast iron 16 hp briggs with the 2 piece flo-jet carb. I have rebuilt 2 diff. carbs and both still leak gas out around the throttle shaft when running. It starts easy but runs rough and backfires through the exhaust at all speeds. adjusting carb changes nothing. float is good needle valve & high speed nozzle are new. This thing has me baffled. A new carb is $140.00 and I want to be sure thats the problem before spending that much money. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,Mike

J.T. I had trouble believing the magnet polarity issue so I inquired at B&S Customer Support. Their answer follows. Sorry I doubted you. Subject Could you please read through the following questions and answers and give me... Discussion Thread Response (Michael-B & S) 03/11/2005 03:17 PM Jack,

Thank you for your inquiry.

The post is correct. The electronic ignition does not work well in conjunction with the existing polarity in these engines’ flywheels. Typically this happens on older (1981 and older) horizontal shaft cast iron engines with model numbers beginning in 23, 24, 30 and 32.

If you have one of these engine models and wish to install an ignition kit, we will re-polarize your flywheel and send it back to you, free of charge. When shipping your flywheel, package it properly (we have received several of these already broken from shipment because they were not packaged properly), with a short note describing what you need, the Model, Type and Code of the engine, and a return address.

Send to:

Briggs & Stratton Corp. Menomonee Falls Distribution Center FLYWHEEL REPOLARIZATION W148 N9121 Patrita Dr. (Dock 23) Menomonee Falls, WI 53051 2272

Please keep in mind, we CANNOT return ship to a PO BOX (we need an actual address to ship to).

If you have any further questions, feel free to update this e-mail.

Sincerely, Mike
Briggs & Stratton eCustomer Support Representative

What is the model number of you engine? Is it a 23. If so you problem IS NOT the carb. You ignition coil is going bad. When the ignition coil goes bad on these engine it will act like a bad carb. It took me a long time to figuire it out. One way to check if this engine has points that are not under the flywheel is to wire in a car coil and battery and see how it runs.

Its not the points I converted it to a magnatron ignition. It could be a sticky exhaust valve. I guess I"ll have to tear it down and find out, Thanks, Mike

Graygander,
You may have just solved your own problem. If you have a model number 326XXX, then you cannot convert it to magnetron igntion if it had points with out changing the polarity of the magnets in the flywheel. I have not done this personally, but Briggs and Stratton informed me of this in the 70s when they came out with this magnetron igntion system. So, if your engine had points to start with, you need to put your old coil and new points in the unit, it should run correctly then. if you still have problems, post back with any other questions, we'll help you out.

If you are leaking fuel out the the throttle shaft when running, it sounds as though your throttle shaft could be worn. it is replaceable. When was the last time you replaced or cleaned points. If it is backfiring through exhaust, could be points are out of time, or exhaust valve is burnt/warped/sticking and letting this happen, would also explain running rough.
