Tom,

Why don't you just find/locate a "solid state" coil for the 12HP Briggs and totally do away with the points and condenser? If you would like more info, email me directly @ freestate@joimail.com.

Steve

I used this method on a 300000 series 12 H.P.and also a 320000 series 16 H.P. Works fine. You will also need an ignition resistor wired into the circuit to extend point life.

thats a good question. theoretically it should work, but i got doubts if the points would hold up using 12 volt coil.let me know if it works out if you do it.. lucas

Use a 12 Volt coil for a Kohler engine. They use a reasonable amount of primary current for good point life.

Bob, I have a question. My local mower shop guy says any coil as long as it is a resistor type can be used on a Kohler. I see a lot of referrence to using a Kohler coil only on Kohler engines. Since I am running a couple of Kohlers (no coil problems yet!) I am wondering if he is right or not? Thanks for any input. Jack

I have used other coils with resistor, too, but it does seem that generally the points last longer with a genuine Kohler, and since they are somewhat competitive in price, I tend to use the Kohlers. I currently have a 140 Deere with a Kohler, running a generic 12 Volt coil with matching external resistor. Point life has NOT been a problem (so far), but that coil runs HOT. I've been expecting it to fail, but so far it has not.

I suspect the dwell angle on these single-cylinder engines is long compared to multi-cylinder automotive engines, so the average current though the points and coil is greater when using a coil designed for automotive use than what the coil is designed for, and it puts more current through the Kohler points than they were designed for.

I guess I should add this to my list of "unsolved mysteries", and take a few minutes to verify the coil resistance and ignition current, and settle this for once and for all!

Bob-what you say about the dwell angle etc. makes sense. If the price is competetive (always figured Kohler was way more expensive) might as well go with Kohler. Thanks, Jack
