Thanks JT and Kent for your replys. You were correct JT... When I replaced the points and put the old coil back on it ran 100% better. I still need to fine tune it as I set the points by eyeball(can't find any of my feeler gauges????)and the carb needs some tweaking. but it starts easy runs smooth and doesn,t backfire out the exhaust. By the way anybody need a new Napa coil(replaces briggs 398811)? email me- I'll give you a good deal. Thanks, Mike

Hey guys, don't bash Napa for this one, The local briggs dealer didn't even know it wouldn't work. I looked up the part # online and then had Napa cross the # over to their part. They didn't even know what I was trying to do. This ones my own fault for not doing my homework first... Mike

Graygander,
Glad to help, I would take the coil back to NAPA and tell them they sold you the wrong coil!! You should not have to give anyone a good deal on it, they should give your money back! Jim

Funny how the faulty coils come through NAPA...

Don't take this as a slur against Napa, just an observation that any time on a car or truck that I have worked on, when there is a NAPA (Echlin) ignition component involved, it is often the source of issue. One would think that NAPA would insist upon a better product out of the Echlin division.

John,
This time it was not an issue with quality, he put a solid state coil on an old Briggs cast iron engine, and you cannot put solid state on cast iron engines without changing the polarity of the magnets in the flywheel. The problem is NAPA does not have people qualified to sell small engine parts and now this poor guy gets to eat a coil because of their lack of knowledge. That is what is wrong with NAPA!!!! But I have to agree with you on the quality thing, I will not buy Echlin electrical products ever again because of quality control problmes.
Jim

I was not aware he had been working on a cast iron engine, so chill- My main assertion about the lower level of reliability of NAPA electrical parts remains, because it is based on experience in the field. Filko suffered much the same fate with reliability after about 1990.

Statistical anamoly? Could be, but I wouldn't bet on it.
