I have a Briggs 11 hp motor that stars and runs fine but makes a loud knocking noise. I pulled the bottom cover off but can"t find any slack in the rod at all. Is there anything else that could cause the noise? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You may have done this already, but pull the head and make sure that the carbon build up is not too great. I"ve seen carbon hammered(like metal) in one spot(not that large)where the piston would " bang" the head. You would feel this between exhaust and intake stroke, up at T.D.C., but then again it could make noise even if you don"t feel it. Another thing we had trouble with was the cam gear on the crank. They got loose and hammered. Just my $.02. Bob, from Illinois

Is this an 11hp sybro-balanced engine? If it that style of engine, check the sybcro-balance and make sure the little tin bearings on the c/s are not worn and letting hammer there.

Upper main bearing wear can cause some sounds similar to a connecting rod, also check the flywheel to see if it may have contacted the magneto at all, if it is loose, or the magneto shifted.

Also too, if there is excessive end play in the crank shaft, it can make that noise also. The end play is "adjusted" by using different thickness crankcase/base gaskets.

Yes pistom or too much valve clearance.
