Another KT 17 S1 question

Was the same rods, pistons, cam, cylinders and heads used on both series 1 and series 2 engines?? The engines look the same to me. I know the S2 engine went to higher oil pressure, and I think they stuck an oil filter on it. And the rods oiled through the crank, and the splash system was no more. Now the reason for the question, I have what was a never installed re-built series 1 engine. A friend that was in the small engine business robbed parts from it to repair other engines. When he gave me this engine it was missing the rings from the .010 pistons, and the piston pins, the camshaft and all the gaskets and seals. The dealers I talked to wouldn't sale me a gasket set, rings, pins for the pistons{pins only come with new pistons} nor a camshaft. said these engines were junk, and Kohler didn't supply parts for these engines anymore. They say the engines are not the same and parts will not interchange. I now have a used cam that looks good, and also used pins for the pistons. {used parts from series 1 engines look new, most series 1 engines didn't run long enough for anything to have wear other than the rods} I need rings and gaskets, and I have an idea about how to get oil to the rods if I come up with rings and gaskets.

Thanks guys, I will make a trip to Ft Worth next month, I'll hit a few Kohler dealers while there, and maybe come up with rings and gaskets. And the used cam that I have has the 2 oil holes. Thanks again.

Actually the oiling system is what Kohler calls a pressurized spray system. Oil is pumped to the main bearings and hollow camshaft. The cam has two small holes drilled in it that spray oil over the rods to lubricate them. So you will need the cam with the holes for an S1. And yes you can still get the parts for it.

Any Kohler dealer should be able to get you a set of .010 over rings and a set of gaskets.

kohler stil makes and supplies the parts. when you order rods, youll get the new style without the dipper hole, youll have to drill it if needed. pistons are the same.true, you cant order just piston pins alone. i think the series one sprayed oil thru orfices in the block to lubricate the rods. synthetic oil improves life greatly of this engine. ive seen no oilchange operators plug up an orfice, people who take care of series one get long life.i have one and change the oil every 20 hours . if one dealer wont order the stuff, find another dealer. im a kohler dealer and order kt stuff all the time. lucas
