I have replaced plug and reseated valves using lapping compound but it still backfires through exhaust and intake. Is there a way to set timing?

Thanks for your help, turns out to be I shaved the flywheel key. Odd since it was a riding mower.

What tractor is this in? What is the model number on the engine? About how many hours are on the engine? How old is it? Is it an INTEK? Very difficult to diagnose without knowing what it is. Certain engine have certain known failure modes.

I would suspect the coil pack. We've had several of these fail and cause all kinds of problems. Everything from hard start, backfiring, weak power to no start at all.

If this engine is an overhead valve engine, the clearances the other guy gave is wrong. Overhead valve B&S are around .004" each BUT you need to check the service manuel that covers your engine.

I don't think this is the problem because i failed to tell you this mower is only a couple years old and it was backfiring proir to reservicing the head. Evidently, something was messing up my timing prior to when I recleaned the head.

After you lapped the valves did you reset the valve end clearances ??? If my memory is correct it should be .005-.007 on the intake valve and .009-.011 on the exhaust valve for a Briggs & Stratton. Just my two cents worth.
