I have a Craftsman riding lawn mower. when I turn the key the starter spins but the teeth aren"t lined up with the fly wheel they are below it. I don"t know if it is supposed to raise up when starting and then lower below it or if it is supposed to be lined up all the time?

oh by the way yes that gear should rise up and the starter gear mesh with the gear on the flywheel.

The gear is suppose to rise up and meet the flywheel as the starter turns. Are your battery cables hooked up correctly ??? One reason the gear will not engage the flywheel is if the starter is turning backwards. If that is not the case then something is wrong with the starter. Just my two cents worth, hope it helps.

The starter will turn backwards if the battery is installed wrong. If the battery is installed wrong a fuse should blow making the mower DEAD. If someone has by-passed the fuse look to having a fried Alternator stator.
