BS engine questions

I hope someone can help answer a stupid question or two. After 15+ years of turning wrenches on gas and diesels in trucks and heavy equipment, I have NEVER messed with a Briggs engine. I have a 3hp. on a Toro tiller - model# 80292, type# 0582-01, code# 75021003. It has no fire. My question is: Would this be point-type ignition, or solid state? If point-type, how do I get to the points and condenser? If solid state, does it have a condenser, and where do I access it? I hate to just tear into it blind, I know how my luck runs. Thanks.

Thanks to everyone who replied, you were all great!

This morning I pulled the flywheel, put in the points and condenser, and got it running. Took about 20 minutes. In all my years of fooling with junk, this was the first time I ever saw a Briggs torn down.

I guess you're never too old to learn.

Unfortunately, it's on a tiller. If only I could get the wife to run it - I told her that I would start it for her, and help her eat the veggies! I think I may have to come up with a better plan.LOL

Why convert to electronic if points/condenser is so cheap? The coil will be ok as is.
(1) Remove the nut or starter ratchet holding the flywheel dow.
(2) With a small crowbar or molding puller put some upward preasure from underneath the flywheel.
(3) With a hammer slightly hit the top of the shaft and the flywheel will pop off. Normally the top is covered with a special cover or tool to prevent damage to the shaft. Take notice of the flywheel key and if it is dented replace.
(4) Lightly sand the flywheel magnet and the contact at the coil if they are rusty.

Dale,
The cheap way would be to get rid of the points and condensor and add omega electronic module with your existing coil instead of whole coil. Around $10.00 or so for the module instead of 40-50 for a magnetron. Also some may call it the atom.

It is a 1975 year and it will be points type if it is original. The points are under the flywheel. If you plan on keeping it I would get a new solid state coil with the electronic ignition built in and be done with it. You only have to remove old coil and install the new one. About 40-45 dollars.

dale if you dont have a flywheel puller for briggs you can use a wheel puller.loosen the flywheel nut and put the wheel puller fingers under each side of flywheel.tension it up tightly but not so tight that you damage the ring gear on the flywheel.give the wheel puller a sharp blow and the flywheel should pop up .if it dosent go get a briggs flywheel puller to keep from damaging the fly wheel.points coil and cond are under there.good luck .hope that helps

The recoil starter clutch is ALSO the flywheel nut. Remove as an assembly DO NOT take apart and loose the little balls.
