This stupid mower! Makin' me crazy. Got the engine and drive problems sorted out, and now the SOB is blowin' the 15A fuse in the igniton circuit. This only happens when the connector to the stator assembly is attached to the wiring harness. Any suggestions?

Sounds like your stator is shorted to ground...

Stator reads infinite resistance to ground one way, 1.5 megohms the other, so the diode appears to be good.

Vairhead,
It is the diode. If it were good no current could flow to the alternator and blow the fuse. When the diode goes bad it is almost a dead short to the ground through the coil of the alternator.
When you checked the ohms do you go through the diode?

Measured from the pin of the red wire to ground (sttor retaining bolt) and measured infinity one way, 1.5M the other polarity. I suppose I could take the stator in to an electrical shop in town.
Thanks for the response!

Varihead,
Think about this. Is the battery current (voltage) supposed to drain to the stator? The diode is a oneway valve to keep that from happening plus I sorts out the AC and gives you only half of the wave as DC.
Do you have a diode to run a test? If you do, hook one end to the battery + and then measure the voltage from the other end to the ground. Then turn the diode around and measure again to ground.
One way there will be no voltage the other way full battery voltage -.6 volts.
Now if you take the diode setup where you get no voltage to ground and put that diode end on the wire coming from the stator what would happen?
Try this. It is enlightening.
David
