Blades Get Slower as Deck Lowers

I have a Craftsman 917.256511 (B&S 15.5 HP IC) that I picked up used recently.

It cut OK for awhile (albiet very unevenly) but then it wouldn't cut really at all. I think the problem is that the blades spin quite a bit slower as the deck gets lower and lower.

Is this a sympton of a worn belt? It does seem to be flapping around quite a bit in lower deck heights. At full height, though, the blades do seem to spin at full speed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yesterday I started to mow with my 3 blade Cub Cadet and only the center blade was cutting after the going got tough. I took the deck off and cleaned the dried out grease and dirt from the spring loaded idler pulley tensioner. Works good now. Might be something like that.

I forgot to mention - I have new blades on it, and I'm mowing at crawl-like speeds, and I get these results. Even when the tractor is stationary I can notice the blades slowing down significantly when I lowerthe deck. It seems to have happened quite quickly, too. It was mowing and then suddenly, not.

Not sure how many blades you have, but did you get them back on the way they came off. They do sometimes have to go a certain way to get the timing of the blades right. Also, you may have checked this, but make sure you have them on the right way for rotation. Not trying to be smart, but I have seen this happen where they were put on backwards. Lyle

Lyle,

Thanks for taking a shot at this. The problem happened before I replaced the blades - I was hoping new blades would remedy the problem, but no. I'm pretty siure they're turned the right way (not upside down). THere are two blades in this mower.

I'm replacing the mower belt now to see if that will work - damn - I can't get the new one on 'cause it's just too short (it's the correct part number, though). Should it really be that hard to get on? THanks...
