I purchased a Sears GT5000 and I'm having a heck of a time with the 48" deck clogging. I just replaced all three baldes with the high lift blades and the clogging is worse. I only made two laps around my two acres and the deck was clogged again. Does anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this probelm. Thank you

It is characteristic of that type of deck. I never liked the metal bar that goes across the deck at the bottom where the chute is. If you look at other tractors like JD, the discharge chute is open on the bottom. To me this bar, put there to add strength, just blocks the grass from coming out. I went to an EXmark walk behind, and have had not problems getting the grass out.

Thank you for all the information. I rechecked the blades and they are installed correctly. I also now see that the chute has a metal bar running accross the chute opening thus causing this deck to clog. I wish that I bought a John Deere.

runs with the choke out hmmmmm mm.sounds like its drawing to much air.is your throttle shaft worn and drawing around it or you might check your gasket.maybe try using some tye of gasket sealer on it.

Unfortunately this is a characteristic of the Craftsman 48 inch mulching deck. This deck has to be cleaned thoroughly after each use to prevent buildup. If not, it will clog and clump the grass. The 50" deck is non mulching and works really well.

If you have belts slipping, engine speed too low, grass to high, mowing too low, deck not pitched correctly, trying to mulch, all will contribute to the problmes, you are having. All worth looking into.

Do you have the discharge shoot blocked for mulching? If so and you are in heavy or wet grass you will need to move slow. I hate the mulching nonsense. Thake way more power and slow travel time.

Russel,
Make sure the blades are on right as mentioned. A lot of what I work on are upside down.

I also have a 48" deck and have no cloging problems. I suspect you have some pretty tall or wet grass, or are running the mower at a pretty low engine speed or some combination of the three.

I don"t like those plastic flaps they"ve started puting on decks in recent years. I put a couple pieces of 1X3 under the front and rear edges, not far from the hinge, so the clippings can spray out. I tend to cut fairly early and the grass is a bit wet so doing that really reduces the clumps. Of course if you have shrapnel on the lawn you will be launching it quite a few feet. I mow about 3 ac and don"t have any spectators around, so I just proceed to gitterdone.

Are the blades on the right direction? I don't have any problem with mine with the 50 inch deck.
