I am working on a MTD mower with a 18.5 B&S which has a fuel pump on the front of the carb. There are no jet adjustments on this carb and I dont know how to cure the hunting problem. It is up and down and all speed settings. I have checked and adjusted the governor to no avail. This is a new carb to me and without adjustments I dont know where to turn. Thanks much for any info.

I have found hunting problems to simply be a dirty carb.

CArefully, so you don't tear up any gaskets, take it apart, clean everything in paint thinner or mineral spirits, blow out every passage and hole you can see with compressed air, and re-assemble.

Problem should be gone. Install a new, good quality fuel filter and air filter.

How old is the engine? This could be real important. Has it every run correctly?

A common cause for this problem is carb wear between the throttle shaft and throttle shaft bore; air entering there leaning out the mixture too much. If this is your problem, you may be able to get it repaired by drilling and bushing.

several days ago I posted the question about this engine hunting. After disassembly of the carb and cleaning it ran fine, for 5 minutes. Eventually I re-disassembled it and put in a new carb and fuel pump kit and so far so good.
