Someone helped me awhile back on cleaning the carb jet on my 18 HP briggs on a sears mower. Now, I have noticed it is getting impossible to start when hot. Was reading through the archives about a compression spring that can break? Where is it located? Plugs were badly fouled so I have also been thinking it is carboned up inside and the carbon is keeping it from turning over. Was gonna yank the starter, looks like it comes off hard. Any thoughts on the subject? REt

You do not tell us exactly what is happening. Does the engine crank ok, or does it barely turn over? My guess it does crank over well, but just won't fire whenever the engine is hot. This is almost always caused by a weak coil. Replace the coil and you will be good to go. Steve

What I am saying, it starts fine when cold. Spins freely. However, if I shut it off to open a gate or something, it acts like it has a low battery, it does not want to turn over fast enough to start it. In fact, it might not turn at all when it comes up on compression. Anyone know what the compression ought to read on these Engines? REt

you don"t have to pull the fly wheel to change the starter.pull off the top cover take the bolt on the out side off then with a 1/2" wrench reach under the fly wheel and remove the bolt.slide the starter and bolt out together.when you reassemble stick the bolt back in the starer and slide it back in.you should be able to start the bolt with your finger tips.also there is an indentation on the bottom side of the fly wheel that will let you do this.i probally chang 4 or 5 of them a month and do it this way.it saves a lot of time.also make sure there is no rust on the pick up on the flywheel ar the coil.this will also give you the problem you described.

the first thing i would do is pull the plugs and chk the compression on the cylinder.if you have compression there is nothin wrong with compression springs.you said the plugs were fouled .did they look black or was it kinda brown with a builup on them.if its black its carb prob.if its brown its either rings or something else.now if the mower runs but gets hotand shuts off or when you turn it off and try to restart .id suspect the solid state ignition module or coil if you will.try that but chk the compression first.don

the plugs had been in for a long time. They were as carbon fouled as one could ever see. Like I say, it runs fine. When I shut it off and try to restart is when it wants to act up and not want to turn. In fact, even cold it don't spin like it ought to. REt

from what your describing it sounds like you may have a bad starter if when its hot and wont turn the engine over.if thats the case you have to pull the flywheel to replace that starter on abriggs twin. don
