Just acquired a Bolen, would like to find manual and need wire diagram. Looks like they have the wiring wrong. I get spark when I turn the key on or off, not while engine is cranking....Thanks Keith

Keith,

The wiring diagram for the 1476 IS on Sonny's site, at least up to the coil, and after the coil is only the breaker points and condensor. The page is linked below. (Go to page 11.) Somewhere on that site is some Wisconsin-specific stuff that will show the engine-mounted ignition stuff.

That is a battery ignition tractor (I have one). If you're only getting a single spark when turning the key on or off, and not while cranking, it sounds like the points are never opening, or there is a short between the coil's
(-) side and the points. A shorted condensor will cause this, too.

Check this with a 12 Volt test light... key on, there should be power at the coil's (+) terminal.

Then, connect the test light to the coil's (-) terminal, and crank the engine. The test light should blink off and on as the breaker points open and close. If the test light is always "off", you do, indeed have points not opening, or a short in that circuit. Post back with what you find!

Bob thanks for the info. I had already down loaded the info for the 1476. I did some more looking at mine, seems to have some sort of electronic ignition. A sending module mounted on the mag shroud w/4 wires coming out , 3 in a connector that goes into the mag shroud and 4th wire goes to the coil. All info on motor has been removed. is it possible to change these engines over to electronic ignition...Again thanks..Keith

I don't know if your motor may have been changed, or if the later ones could have had electronic ignition.

Does it still have a Wiconsin engine? They did make electronic ignition engines, but I don't know if any found their way into 1476's from the factory.

Electronic ignition parts are probably still around but $$$.

There are guys on the Stationary Engines board on this site who are more familiar with the Wisconsins than I am. Suggest finding the engine model number and posting there.

Problem with that Bob, is someone removed the ID tag off of the motor.
Thanks... Keith

Gregg, thanks for the website. I looked at the info there, Bolens never released the manuals for 1476,77 and some others. So I still am looking for a service manual and wiring diagram for a 1476 Bolens tractor. Guess i will start looking on ebay, even though I do not do the ebay thing....Thanks Gregg.....Keith
