400 jd mower...need engine

i have the opportunity to buy a 400 jd mower without an engine..guy wants $1500 for it and i need to know what type of engine and prices on used ones are..also were these good machines or plagued with troubles...thanks for any help...its gas by the way..or could i put a diesel in its place?

With no engine you have no way of checking other things; hydrostatic transmission, power steering (if it has that), differential, electricals. Better to buy one that runs. My opinion.

You need to start at 500.00 you can buy a running one for less than 1500.00 this guy is out to skin you if you let him.

I sold a 400 with a good engine for $1300.00 a couple of years ago, so in my opinion it is too much money, especially if you go with the Honda replacement engine, which I do recommend. Good luck, John

There is a shop in Indiana, small engine warehouse, that advertises repowering 400 & 420 JD L&G tractors. The best engine I have found is a Honda V2. Their price is $1500. They have a great website so you can check it out. smallenginewarehouse.com
