BS Vanguard question

I just took delivery of a new (0 hr.) Simplicity Citation ZTR with a 23 HP B&S "Big Block" Vanguard engine. I wasn't here yesterday, when the dealer dropped it off. In fact, the entire transaction took place over the phone...I never saw the mower or have yet to meet the dealer in person.
My question is: After reading the owner's manual and trying the mower in a practice trial; the engine runs rough and smokes black when moving the throttle up. After a few seconds, it clears up and smoothes out. Is this normal for a new engine? I checked the air cleaner, and the pre-cleaner is oil soaked to the point where oil is dripping off. Too much oil? The crankcase oil level is normal. I've also checked the choke and throttle assemblies, both appear as they should be.
Thanks

Thanks everyone for your help and comments. I followed the BS engine manual instructions as to washing the pre-cleaner and not oiling it. With the foam PC installed dry the engine seems to run entirely normal. We tried it out yesterday for a couple of hours, and it worked great. Strong running engine...fantastic mowing machine, compared to our old one.

jt is correct. the pdi--pre delivery inspection, should have caught that. i work for deere dealer. that is why we do pdi. the way oily filter is causing the engine to run as if on choke. can"t breathe with all that oil in the way. sounds as though the block breather may be bad, allowing the oil to get upstairs. make the dealer fix it. at zero hours, not your responsibility. if you mess around too much, you will void that.

Now that brings up a good one. Anyone know where the crankcase breather is located on the 18 horse?

Sounds as though you need to contact Mr. Dealer and have him fix it, you did not buy a new mower to have to work on it. What you are finding is part of the set up and delivery on a new mower and maybe was not done correctly. At least that is the way I do business.

How well does it run without the filter? Are the spark plugs fouled because of running with an oily air supply or from an oiled air cleaner restricted fuel rich mixture? Call the dealer and explain the problem and let them come and fix it. It is an expensive machine and it should be right at least for a few days when new.

Sounds to melike he overoiled the filter but the black smoke and the way the engine was running indicates to me that the fuel mixture is a litle rich! Easiest way to remember or a good rule of thumb is white smoke oil, black smoke too much fuel, blue smoke rings!
later!!

Don't know about that BIG engine, but I seem to remember Briggs cautions AGAINST oiling the outer air filter foam wrap on the smaller Vanguards. They are to be used DRY. Better find a manual for the Briggs that gives correct specifics, one way or the other.

The overwrap is ALWAYS oiled but you need only a tablespoon of oil at MOST to oil them. Without the oil they are of NO use on the filter. If there is a lot of oil the paper filter may be oil soaked and WILL need replacing.

Kent,
A lot of the newer engines are using a dry prefilter. It is there to extend the life of the air filter by filtering out the big chunks before it gets to the paper filter. On the older style with the foam wrapped around the paper filter, you are correct, but these new ones with the foam and flat paer are all used dry. You are correct in that if the foam is overoiled to the point of driping, then both filters are ruined and need to be replaced.

Kent,

I just checked the instructions for my 18HP Vanguard V-Twin. Manual says the foam pre-filter may be washed in soap and water, squeezed dry, and then re-intalled DRY... NO OIL.

Don't know what the proper procedure is for his 23 HP, but the it seems like the oil filter may be the problem!

I have an 18hp vanguard as well, and the manual for it also says the precleaner is left dry. if it is oiled, it acts like the choke is on. I just washed it yesterday.

That should read OILY AIR FILTER, not OIL FILTER!
