16hp Vanguard runs only with choke???

Hi folks, I"ve got a Cub Cadet with a 16hp Vanguard (320 hrs.) in it and I was mowing for about 10 minutes the other day when it started to cough and sputter. I limped back to the garage and proceeded to clean the air cleaner, change the spark plugs, change the fuel filter, drain the gas tanks, and blow out the fuel line with a compressor.

I put in some new gas and it"s the same problem. It starts great when choked and it even sound pretty good with full choke, but as soon as I unchoke it it stalls.

I wanted to remove the carb, but I need to remove the intake manifold to do so and I can"t get the housing off of the engine. I"ve removed all of the screws and bolts that I could see, but there must be something else holding it on. Are ther screws down under the accordion tube between the firewall and engine?

Any ideas? Am I on the right track here? Does this sound like a carb problem or maybe electrical?

Also, one cylinder"s spark plug is wet.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Adam Collegeville, Pa.

The wet cylinder indicates to me its getting to much fuel but the fact that only 1 cylinder is wet and the other one is dry may indicate that the dry cylinder isn't getting any fuel, because its a twin both cylinders have to work if its firing on 1 cylinder then its loading the motor down and requiring more fuel to get the job done. According to what you have said, i'd check to see if both plugs are firing if they are then a possible obstruction in the intake manifold, also you might want to check the valves on the cylinder thats dry
to see if your intake valve is opening or not! The wet cylinder indicates that one side is getting fuel and the other side is not.
Later!!
