I have a small coleman generator that i cant get to run unless it is on half choke. It has a sealed carb, and i have tried to get it to run better with carb cleaner. It did run off the choke for about two hours, but now im back to the same delima. i tried more cleaner but that didnt help. Whats wrong?

Dave, a friend recommended the same thing just the other day. i will try to tighten those bolts and if that doesnt work, i will try to clean the carb. it must be a picece of dirt because i always turn off the gas valve and let it run until it dies.

Sounds as though you have a plugged high speed jet. If it is a Tecumseh engine, take the bolw nut off and clean it out good or take a drill bit tip cleaner and clean this out. It has a cross drilled hole in it, but it also has hole in the jet that gets plugged up. That is the jet you need to clean and or oversize just a little. That should solve your problem. Plus whatever you do, DO NOT use Sta-bil in this, that stuff will have adverse effect with some gasoline and make it worse. The only stabilzier I use and have consistant luck with is Briggs stabailizer or Sea Foam.

I have a Homelite LR4400 which had the same problem. I removed the threaded plug exposing the mainjet and pushed a welding tip clener through the fixed jet to clean any debris out. Then I added Clemtrol B-12 to the gas. Finally I put in a new hotter plug, 82 rather than 77, and it runs like a champ.

I had a small push mower with a briggs engine that would not run. Last weekend I took the Carb off and took the mixture screw out and used cannned spray carb cleaner and blew out all the holes and openings. (turn the mixture screw in all the way counting turns before taking out, and then when you re-assemble put it in the same number of turns. This is a very common problem with small engines that do not get enough use and the gas goes bad. It is a good idea to shut the gas off when the engine is running and let it run dry, thereby not giving it any liquid to gum up. Also a good idea to us (Stabil) in the recommended concentration on engines that are likely to sit for a long time without running.

Are the bolts that hold the carb to the intake manifold tight? Sounds like an air leak. Dave

if it has a sediment bowl check the screen above it and see if its clogged and you can try opening the bottom of the bowl and see if its getting enough gas. Could also be a coil problem?

Hi,
The unit is about 3 years old & has a gas filter.
With the bowl removed, there is a steady flow of gas.
It runs great at 3/4 choke, but starts sputtering & surging if the choke is set wide open. Since the carb is sealed, I cant compensate for whatever it is doing by rich or lean adjustments.

One friend thaought it was getting too much air, another thought it wasnt getting enough gas.

will a fuel system cleaner help?

I doubt a fuel system cleaner would work if the unit is only a few years old and the gas has never sat in it long enough to turn to varnish. It may have a piece of dirt in a jet and needs the choke to create enough vaccum to pull the gas through? Sounds like its not getting enough gas to me.
