What do you all think the best value in a garden tractor made today is? Used to mow between 1-3 acres.

Sears tractors are a good value if you understand that these are light duty tractors. Catch one on sale, and the prices are reasonable. Simple is better, and there is nothing wrong with the less expensive models. They will last if you do the following: 1. Read the owners manual and learn how to adjust the clutch and belts etc. 2. Replace belts when they fray..
3. Change the oil frequently and grease the front end etc. 4. Identify parts numbers for the Mandrels (blades mount to these) as they do not last forever. If you hit a rock, the shaft will warp and you get an uneven cut. 5. Remove the mower deck every so often, and pull the cover off. Clean debris and lube the idler puller. (has a spring connected to it) Spray a little silicone lube on the mandrel mounting bolts so when it comes time to replace them, they will remove easily. 6. Keep battery full of water and tickle charge it between uses. Remove and clean cable connections with emery cloth to a shine, both at battery and solenoid.
7. Spray some silicone into ends of Throttle cable and choke cable every so often. 8. Lube anything else that is obvious.
9. Once a year, drain the rear end and replace the gear oil. This is an important thing to do..the rear end will last the life of the tractor if you do this.

If All you need to do is mow then look at Walker or grasshopper. They are both zero turn finish mowers that many commercial companies use.

If all you are going to do is mow, the JD LT133 is a nice machine for $1,999. I have the predecessor, a 1990 JD STX38 with nearly 400 hours. The Kohler is still going strong and the only thing I have done, besides routine maintenance, is replace the blades and the battery once. Maintenance wise, it has been a great machine.

WITHOUT A DOUBT JOHN DEERE. I HAVE A 955 I THINK . ANYWAYS IT HAS ABOUT 30 HP. IT IS HYDORSTATIC FOUR WHEEL DRIVE WITH R4 TIRES. IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE ( $17,000) BUT THEY WILL LAST A LIFETIME OF TAKEN CARE OF. UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO BE PLOWING A LOT GET HYDROSTATIC DRIVE. IT IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY.

The Percheron mare that the old farmer down the road gave me does a heck of a job on about 5 acres with very little maintenance! Also plows, discs, provides fertilizer and is capable of providing her own replacement!
