A freind of mine just bought a 212 JD with a 12 hp kohler from his uncle. The engine does not have more than 15 hours on it since his uncle rebuilt it. I'm told his uncle's son had been giving it more than it could handle one very hot day and killed it. Ever since then the engine has lacked power.

Any ideas on what to first look for to get this thing back in operating condition? I am not very familiar with this engine and have not seen it yet, but my friend said he is gong to bring it over some time this week so any suggestions would help. Thanks, DRD

What do you mean "killed it" ? Since it sounds like it was ran extremely hot probably best bet is to pull head and see how everything looks. You could have blown head gasket, warped the head or block, sticking valve etc. At 15 hours use rings should have been well seated. Pulling the head off is simple, don't take much time and saves alot of guessing.

It could be a lot of things really but I'd check for spark first.
Then I'd check compression. He could have fried the rings if it was just rebuilt not having enough time to seat in before it was overheated.
Is it getting enough fuel? Fuel pump?
