5hp briggs wont start

i have a 1976 briggs 5 horse 4 stroke and i cant get the thing to start i have gotten a new spark plug clan the carberator good tryed to gap the magneto with two peices of paper and still cant get the thing to even spark but the problem is i dont know what kind of magneto it is or what to gap it to this engise model number is model 130292 type 0709-01

Also, make sure the flywheel hasn't rotated on the crankshaft. This is sometimes caused by a sudden stoppage of the engine. The keyway in the flywheel and the keyway in the crankshaft should line up. You can see this just by taking the flywheel nut off. If the flywheel has rotated on the crankshaft, it will have sheared the woodruff key, and the magnet that the magneto uses won't be in time with the points. That means NO SPARKIES!

Unless this tiller does not get hardly any use, I would go get the part number 397358 solid state coil assembly and put it on. This will get rid of the points, and get rid of the problems you will have by keeping points and condensor on this unit.

Make sure the wire to your kill switch isn"t shorted out on the tin. joe in ny

Or try a new condencer And the other suggestions The
coil to flywheel gap is .010 clean the rust off both surfaces gap points.get a new condencer and fire it UP good luck . 2cents

beggsie do as rod said try that .if you still dont get no fire the armature number is 397358 .u oughta be able to get it locally for about 35 or 40 dollars. don

I"ve had this problem before too.I use a business card to set the mag gap to the flywheel.Be sure to have the rust sanded off of the mag and the flywheel magnet.If your engine has points,take some fine sand paper and lightly scuff the film off of the contacts.set the gap at .020.Good luck!...Rod in Wi.
