First of all, on engines that old the points usually get a little crud on them from moisture, not your fault, just something you have to put up with and correct when it happens 2nd.. You can go to a salvage yard and get a Magnetron coil off an old worn out or blown engine (about 3 to 5 bucks)If you buy a new one it will cost about 25 to 40 bucks,Don't think so in my case.I'll bet i got about 30 of them from the salvage yard where i work.. 3rd DO NOT let them small engine techs tell you that you have to change the flywheel along with the Magnetron coil YOU DON'T NEED TO. I convert all my briggs to magnetron (electronic ignition).Hope this sheds a little light in your situation????

Shannon,
You are partially correct about changing flywheels with magnetron igntion. If you were to attempt to put a magnetron ignition on a cast iron engine that has points, you do have to either change the flywheel ot the polarity of the magnets in the flywheel. On the engines with a 3 legged coil, you cannot put magnetron ignition on tham at all.

Beggsie,
If you will email me I will tell you all the info you need to get this problem resolved. I will help you all I can, but on a tiller, if you do not have solid state ignition, it is the way to go, it sure makes them start easier, and you do not ever have to mess with points again. But, again, email me and I will explain to you what you need. Jim

Cannot Find Id. Number To Order Manuals in reply to DON WATTS , 06-15-2005 15:43:57
I have a Briggs & Stratton Engine on a riding mower and need a manual.
The moter is suppost to be a 16.5 Hp.
The engine is not the original motor.
There are no ID numbers that I can find on the motor.
Is there any other way to determine what size the motor is so that I can order a repair manual?

I would not advise you to buy the part you mentioned. Suggest you put new points and sand the magnet and amatuer contacts. Set the gap at .10. It is unusual for the coil system to go bad on these engines. Very few wires there that would require a wiring diagram. You are probably dealing with a kill switch wire.

The flywheel nut is the one way clutch that the recoil pulley connects to. Remove the starter clutch/flywheel nut as an assembly.

You might try the briggs web site. You may be able to fish that model number out there and view it in PDF. Takes a little patience.
