I have a 1994 murray 42" mower that the drive belt that drives the transmission needs to be replaced. What i need to know is how to go about changing the belt. Will the rear part of the mower need to be taking lose from the axle? Also i gave this mower a bath the other day and now it acts like it has a saftey swicth is not working it acts like the battery is dead but it is fully charged. Will the mower start if i disconnect all the swicthes? It will start buy jumping direct to the starter. Thanks for your help Delbert.

I have a 1994 vintage 14 hp with shifter in the fender. You won't have to remove the transaxle, but you may have to disconnect the lever that shifts the axle at one of the ball joints near the transaxle. Older style with the shifter in a slot between your legs you could snake the belt in through the shifter slot.

You will have a lot more room if you take the deck off and It would be great if you could stand the mower on its back end. (remove the battery.) You may have to also remove the idler pulley(s) and start the belt installation at the front engine pulley. May have to remove guards from around engine pulley as well.

I usually don't change the ground drive belt unless its necessary. There is a lot less stress on that belt than on the blade drive belt. I can recall changing the ground drive belt on that mower only once in the past 11 years.

Delbert: I had an 88 model I ran for 11 years. Never had any sxw problems as I used an air hose instead of a water hose. But on the belts, I usually dropped the deck. when I replaced either belt, I replaced both of them. If one is bad, you as well change both of them at one time. Swx's are not expensive. As don stated, try some wd-40.

on those older murrays normally you can insert the belt from the top down thru the shifter.then you pull it thru and from under neath you can route the belt around all the pulleys .at the back of the trans theres belt guides around the trans pulley .loosen them up to get belt in there and re tighten.as far as the switch spray it with wd 40 and if it still wont work you mighta shorted it out .try that out and good luck. don
