I own one and hate it, the tractor part is ok but the 44" mower is a POS as fer as im concerned, it leaves skips when turning, even turning out for a tree, it leaves uncut or partially cut stems when cuttin in taller grass and all that with new blades.

is this normal for these machines? is there somthing that can be done to improve it? Would changing pullies to increase blade tip speed help?

Last sharpening of blades I put um in the vice and bent the back up to give them more lift, that helped at least it blows the clippings out better, but still looks like heck behind the tractor.
I have a Homelite T16 with a 48" deck and a blowed up Briggs it cut like a champ even in 8-10" tall grass, was thinking bout retro fittin that deck under the 1420. also thinkin bout gettin a Zero Turn type mower and tradin off the 1420 till I found out it aint worth much even tho it is like new. the 1420 I think is about a 1991 model.

come on T, did ya ever hear of blade balancer, how do you exspect to get a nice cut when your bending your blades, brake down dude and buy some high lift blades. my cub would'nt pick up good, come to find out had standard blades, put high lifts on her and we're both happier than pig in crap!!!!! certain grasses just won't cut even either. you know like if your trying to hay the back 40.

ive allways felt john deeres cut better that cub decks..... that said, some high lift blades or gator blades and slowing down some may help. a low tire or bent blade/blade mounting can give uneven cut also. lucas

Have you tried some gator blades on it yet, we have a 982 with 50" deck that cut like $^#&, put gator blades on it and then it did at least mow half way decent.
