I recieved a Sears lawn tractor which won"t start it backfires. It has a 14.5 OHV Briggs model28s707
on it.I purchased a manual gapped the valves still the same problem. Checked the Governor adjustment , and carb same problem. Pulled the head cleaned a nd inspected the headstill same problem. Turned it over without the sparkplug finger over the hole seems like good compression and push. I found the filywheel shearpin sheared replaced it same problem and sheared the pin again. Cracked the case open inspected the cam ,crank, rods , and govorner parts all looks fine to me. Can anyone help me?

Sure sounds like you are not getting the fly wheel tight. Been there and done that. Really clean the flywheel taper hole and also the shaft.Do not have any oil or grease on this. Get the washer on the top, back the right way and tighten it, when you think it is tight, tighten is a bit more. SOmetimes a backfire will shear the keys.

This is a problem that has been discussed many times on this site. It seems to be a problem with these newer Briggs engines. The nut holding the flywheel needs to be REALLY tight or it shears the key. Your not alone.

In the old days, the flywheel nut was to be torqued to 55 ft/lbs. Don't have a clue about today's engines but I still torque them to as close to that as I can get.
