First: there is no drain on the hydrolic reservoir tank. It is under the tractor on the travel control valve. You have to remove the quarter inch hex socket plug. When you remove the plug, hydrolic system will drain but not completely (so have a pan ready). You need to remove the spark plug wire and ground it. (yes this has to do with the hyd sys) As system drains crank the engine. BE SURE THE SPARK PLUG WIRE IS OFF THE PLUG!!! You don't want the tractor to start. Replacement oil (NOT hydrolic fluid) should be either 20/40 or 15/40 weight. DO NOT FILL THE RESERVOIR ANY HIGHER THAN 3-4" FROM THE TOP. (stick your index finger in the hole at the top of the tank and if you can JUST touch the oil, that is enough) Do not allow any dirt to enter the reservoir or drain plug area. After filling reservoir w/about 3 qrts, start tractor and try to move it forward or backward 2-3 feet 2 or 3 times. If tractor jerks, or squeals, turn it off and add another quart. This allows oil to circulate thru system and release any air.
SECOND: From what I can understand about the starting situation, when you went to tighten the nut, did you use 2 open end wrenches on the terminal? You need to hold the bottom nut stationery and tighten the top nut. But seeing that you have tried to tighten your cable to the starter, you may have twisted and broken the sodder connection inside the starter/generator.

Okay, try checking your connections on your ignition switch for corrosion and rust. Use emery cloth or sandpaper. If still a problem, you may need a new ignition switch. New switch is about $30. Do not buy an off market ignition. Go to a Case/Ingersoll dealer. The only other way I can help, is I will need the year of the tractor, need the PIN # off the tractor below the steering wheel (where you sit) on a silver tab.
